We traveled from Tashkent to Samarkand by train (there is nice one). At that time (year 2006) to buy ticket you had to get registration document from goverment (takes 1 day if you are in hotel). Prices are very cheap all over the country.
In Samarkand we met our guide: Nakib Habibovich cel. phone (99866) 2235807, 2270207.
Very good one. He also helped us to arrange our hotel in Samarkand and a car to Buhara and back to Samarkand (it takes 4.5 hours one way). Car price was $100 US dollars for the whole trip + driving all day within cities :). We actually left Buhara by plain directly to Tashkent (the price was about $50).
The funny thing that I had to sleep on the roof of the hotel since they booked just one room for me and my colleague (they were thinking that we are married couple :).
Manager in the hotel told us lots of very interesting legends about Timur Tamerlane. Some of them were scary ones. Well, that night next to Gur-e Amir (Tomb of the King) - king is Tamerlane, after all the stories - it was funny night on the roof - honestly I did not sleep :) since were expecting the spirit. That is how stories about Tamerlane touched my mind.
Next morning we finaly arrived to Buhara.
I recomed you to go directly to the fort named Ark where you can take a guide to visit all places in Buhara.
I liked Buhara very much - you can feel the old city spirit.
My opinion that Buhara a bit more interesting then Samarkand in terms of feeling the old city spirit (since in Samarkand old buildings are quite spread all around modern city).
